Why Reading Books Still Matters in the Digital Age

Balochistan, Sovereignty and the Challenge of Maintaining Peace and Security

In the digital age, the ways of learning, teaching and spreading messages have changed. The use of mobile phones, the internet and artificial intelligence (AI) is increasing rapidly, ultimately diverting this generation away from books. Because of this change, some people think that books are becoming less important. However, reading remains a valuable activity for personal, educational and intellectual development. In the contemporary world, dominated by digital technology, books play an important role in shaping educated, thoughtful and informed individuals.

Books Provide Deep Knowledge

A short social media post may give us one fact, but a book can explain the background, causes, examples, consequences and different perspectives related to that fact. Books are especially valuable for students because academic subjects require more than basic information.

Reading Improves Concentration

We may watch a short video, check a message, scroll through social media and then read an article within a few minutes. Reading a book requires a different kind of attention. We normally need to remain focused on the same subject for a longer period of time.

Books Develop Critical Thinking

Books provide information, but while reading, we may ask:

  • Is this argument logical?
  • What evidence does the writer provide?
  • Do I agree with the author’s opinion?

This process develops critical thinking.

Books Improve Vocabulary and Writing Skills

When people regularly read novels, essays or books, they naturally encounter new vocabulary. Good readers often become better writers because reading exposes them to different writing styles. Reading gives us examples of how language can be used effectively.

Books Encourage Imagination

Especially fictional books allow readers to create mental pictures. Unlike watching a movie, where images are already provided, reading requires the mind to participate actively. This makes reading a powerful way to develop creativity and imagination.

Books Preserve History and Human Experiences

Books act as records of human experiences. Historical books preserve information about previous generations, while biographies record the lives of important individuals.

Reading Helps People Become Independent Learners

One of the greatest benefits of books is that they allow people to learn without always depending on a teacher. A person can choose a book about almost any subject and study it independently.

Books Provide Reliable and Organised Information

The internet contains enormous amounts of information, but the quality of that information varies. Books may also be based on research and references. However, books can contain mistakes or biased interpretations too.

Reading Reduces Dependence on Short Content

Modern digital platforms often present information in very short forms. Many important subjects cannot be properly understood through a short post.

Taking everything into account, artificial intelligence can now summarise information, answer questions, translate languages and generate text within seconds. However, this makes reading more important, not necessarily less important.

The modern world does not require us to choose between books and technology. Instead, we can use technology to access books and use books to develop the intellectual skills needed to use technology wisely.

Therefore, books are not outdated. The form of reading remains important. A person who continues to read in the modern age can gain not only information but also knowledge, imagination, critical thinking and a broad understanding of the world.
