Protecting the Family System and the Rights of Parents

Written by: Dr Muhammad Waheed-uz-Zaman

The family is the fundamental unit of society, while parents are its central pillars of upbringing and stability. Islam has declared respect for parents, good marital conduct, the upbringing of children, and the rights of relatives as religious responsibilities. Today, neglect of parents, domestic disagreements, inheritance disputes, interference through social media, and the growing generation gap are major challenges facing the family system. The solution lies in implementing the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah in practical life.

Marital Relationship

Allah has created pairs on earth, with the husband and wife forming the fundamental centre of the family. In other words, these two individuals play the primary and central roles in establishing a family. They are garments for one another. Their responsibility is to protect each other in every respect, take the best possible care of one another, and fulfil each other’s needs. Allah Almighty says:

Translation: They are garments for you, and you are garments for them.

Marriage does not merely mean the fulfilment of physical desires. Rather, it signifies the establishment of a generation and a society that proclaims the Oneness of Allah Almighty and implements the teachings of Islam within society. However, anyone who turns towards adultery openly violates the commandments of Allah. Islam has prescribed marriage for the continuation of human generations and prohibited adultery to protect lineage and prevent the mixing of family identities. Allah says:

Translation: If you fear that you will not deal justly with orphan girls, then marry women of your choice, two, three, or four. But if you fear that you will not be able to maintain justice, then marry only one, or those whom your right hands possess. That is more likely to prevent you from committing injustice.

This means that if a man likes a woman, or a woman likes a man, Islam allows them to propose marriage to one another rather than choosing a path that destroys the boundaries established by Allah. Allah Almighty says:

Translation: And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find tranquillity in them, and He placed love and mercy between you. (Surah Ar-Rum: 21)

A husband is made a source of comfort for his wife, and a wife is made a source of comfort for her husband. In other words, they are each other’s needs and sources of peace, and they are inseparably connected.

Neglect of Women’s Domestic Responsibilities

The stability of the family is closely associated with the role of women. When women left their homes in the name of earning a livelihood, it was not only husbands, children, and women themselves who suffered; human relationships also became casualties of this employment-driven change. Women were encouraged to leave their homes in the name of so-called freedom.

Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union, wrote a book titled “Perestroika”. This book is widely known around the world and is available in published form. In this book, Gorbachev included a chapter titled “Status of Women”, in which he clearly wrote:

“In Western society, women were taken out of their homes. As a result, although we achieved certain economic benefits and some increase in production, the family system faced destruction. Allah has bestowed upon women the honour and dignity of staying comfortably at home and raising their children. The responsibility has been placed upon men to carefully look after all these matters and issues. If a woman wants to go outside and earn, there is no restriction on her. However, the question arises: if I am already being provided for, why should I unnecessarily go outside and exhaust myself?”

Unreasonable Expectations

One of the biggest obstacles to marriage is the unreasonable expectations that parents sometimes attach to their children, while children themselves also develop assumptions about their prospective husbands or wives. They then attempt to find spouses for themselves or their children based on these assumptions.

Instead of establishing personal assumptions and expectations, we should give priority to the standards prescribed by Islam. Rather than living in a world of dreams, we should also consider ground realities and social values.

Severing Ties with Relatives

Islam places great importance on maintaining family relationships. Not only is maintaining ties encouraged, but Muslims are also instructed to preserve relationships with relatives under all circumstances. Anyone who deliberately severs these ties will not receive a favourable reward in the Hereafter. Elsewhere, the Quran condemns the severing of family relationships. Allah Almighty says:

“Those who break the covenant of Allah after accepting it, sever the relationships that Allah has commanded to be maintained, and spread corruption on earth are the ones upon whom is the curse of Allah.”

(Surah Ar-Ra’d: 25)

The blessed teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) explain that maintaining family ties is a means of increasing sustenance and bringing blessings to one’s lifespan:

“Whoever wishes to have an increase in his provision and blessings in his lifespan should maintain family ties.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Regarding those who sever family relationships, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“The one who severs family ties will not enter Paradise.”

(Sahih Muslim)

It is not enough merely to maintain relationships with relatives; spending on them also brings blessings in one’s sustenance.

“Spending on a relative carries a double reward: one for charity and the other for maintaining family ties.”

(Jami’ at-Tirmidhi)

A person is instructed not only to protect himself but also to remain concerned about the well-being of his family. Unfortunately, an attitude has developed in our society in which people say: “Why should I be concerned about what someone else is doing? It is not our problem, and I do not care about anyone.” However, the Holy Quran states:

“O you who believe! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire.”

(Surah At-Tahrim: 6)

Similarly, Islam has made parents responsible for providing their children with proper education and upbringing.

The Virtue of Maintaining Family Ties

A person without compassion is merely a collection of bones and flesh. Compassion is essential in a human being and is a sign of faith. A blessed Hadith states:

Translation: Whoever wishes to have an increase in sustenance and blessings in lifespan should maintain family ties. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5986)

Fair treatment is not limited to relatives; it is equally essential when dealing with one’s children. Parents must not favour one child excessively while depriving the others of love, attention, affection, and inheritance. Allah Almighty says:

Translation: Fear Allah and maintain justice among your children. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 2587)

A family is not merely about living under one roof; it is about love, justice, respect, responsibility, and sacrifice. Respect for parents, fairness among children, compassion between husband and wife, and the preservation of relationships with relatives are the foundations of a righteous society.

If we want our children to respect us in our old age, we must also treat our own parents and elders in a manner that teaches the younger generation respect and service.

My prayer is: O Allah! Have mercy on our parents, fill our homes with love and peace, transform our disagreements into opportunities for reconciliation, grant us the ability to fulfil one another’s rights, and make our families examples of faith, morality, and mutual compassion. Ameen.
