Amid rising tensions between Iran and the US, Iranian Parliament Speaker Baqir Qalibaf has said that his country will not bow to military threats and pressure. On the other hand, the Iranian army has claimed that its air defence system has shot down a US drone in the airspace of the southern city of Bandar Abbas.
Addressing the parliament session, Qalibaf said that a response will be given to the violation of Iran’s territorial integrity that the opponents do not expect. According to him, threats of military action or assassination cannot make the Iranian nation give up its rights and interests.
The Iranian speaker said that unless the US changes its attitude, stops its series of intimidation and threats and takes practical steps to fulfil its promises, it will be difficult to trust its claims.
He also held the US responsible for the current crisis and said that Washington must take steps to end the tension. This stance has come at a time when uncertainty persists regarding the resolution of the dispute between the two countries and possible military action.
On the other hand, according to the Iranian military, its air defence system targeted and destroyed a US-made LUCAS drone over Bandar Abbas. The information was reported by the Iranian news agency Tasnim. However, the available information did not provide details of the drone’s mission and the full circumstances of the incident.
There has been no independent confirmation of the incident, and available reporting does not include confirmation of the Iranian claim by US officials that the drone was shot down. Therefore, it is premature to draw any final conclusions about the full nature of the incident and its possible consequences.
Bandar Abbas is a major port city on Iran’s southern coast. The area is of great naval and strategic importance to the region due to its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz. In such a situation, the drone-related claim and Tehran’s harsh rhetoric further highlight the ongoing tension between the US and Iran.
