Karachi: The wave of decline in the Pakistan Stock Exchange kept investors under pressure during the trading week, where the benchmark KSE-100 Index closed at 165,124 points after falling by almost 2,000 points. With this decline in the market, the value of total investment also decreased significantly.
According to business data, the index recorded a decrease of 1,964 points, while the total capitalisation of the market decreased from Rs 209 billion to Rs 18,359 billion. The volume of buying and selling of shares throughout the day was 360 million shares, worth about Rs 14.5 billion.
Several factors are being considered important behind the negative trend in the market. Concerns about a war between Iran and the United States, pressure on crude oil prices in the global market and concerns arising from the attack on Saudi Arabia have affected investor confidence. In such circumstances, global political tensions can create additional uncertainty for an economy like Pakistan that relies on imported energy.
On the other hand, the upcoming monetary policy meeting of the State Bank of Pakistan on October 29 is also the focus of investors. Comments regarding a possible increase in interest rates have reinforced the cautious attitude of the market. Higher interest rates can increase the borrowing costs of businesses and affect investment decisions in stocks.
According to market sources, selling pressure increased further after the imposition of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which accelerated the decline in the index. However, rather than attributing the current downturn to any single event, it is important to view the domestic political situation, global risks and expectations regarding monetary policy in a holistic perspective.
The future direction of the stock market will depend on the improvement in these factors, clear signals on interest rates and restoration of investor confidence. Global energy prices and domestic political stability may also affect business activities in the coming days.
