Islamabad: Economic and financial policy talks are underway between Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in which various issues, including the sugar sector, fuel subsidy, gas tariff, and energy sector reforms, are under discussion.

More meetings are expected today between officials of the Ministry of Finance and the IMF mission. Efforts are being made to finalize the points of economic and financial policies through consultations with various ministries and divisions.

Deregulation of the sugar sector is also an important issue in the talks. The IMF is pushing for further liberalization of the market, but the Sindh government has expressed reservations about some aspects of the federal sugar policy. Due to the provincial stance, a consensus has not yet been reached on this issue.

Tax incentives for electric vehicles under the auto policy are also included in the review. The IMF has suggested eliminating these facilities.

Significant progress has also been made on the issue of fuel subsidy. The IMF agrees with the limited subsidy given to consumers by the prime minister but is not in favor of expanding the scope of this facility further. It is proposed that the subsidy be limited to owners of small vehicles.

The meeting with the Ministry of Petroleum will discuss the tariff structure of gas and the circular debt of the gas sector. Both these issues are considered important to reduce the financial pressure in the energy sector.

On the other hand, the privatization of discos and line losses incurred during power distribution will also be discussed with officials of the Ministry of Privatization.
