Islamabad: After the announcement of a possible long march by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, the federal government has intensified consultations on the political and security situation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called an important meeting on the matter.
According to sources, the meeting will be attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, among other important officials. The meeting will discuss the PTI’s long march, the law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the possible future course of action.
Various constitutional and administrative options are also being considered at the government level to deal with the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to sources, consultations are also being held on the possibilities of Governor’s rule and emergency; however, no final decision has been taken in this regard yet.
This matter has become even more important when a high-level consultative meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s House yesterday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The meeting was attended by federal ministers and other important officials, where the overall law and order situation across the country, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was reviewed.
According to sources, in the last meeting, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi gave a detailed briefing on the law and order situation. The participants also reviewed the situation and political contacts that emerged after the PTI’s announcement of the long march.
The latest consultation of the federal government is also expected to consider various options related to the future of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, none of these measures has been declared a final government decision.
On the other hand, the announcement of the PTI’s protest activity has further highlighted the already existing political tension between the federation and the province. The direction of the situation is likely to become clearer with the government’s action plan and PTI’s political strategy in the next few days.
