Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has said Tehran has received messages from several neighbouring countries on new security arrangements and economic cooperation in the region. The recent regional environment has compelled countries to rethink their security priorities, he says.
The messages received not only addressed defence matters but also new prospects for economic cooperation in the region, Qalibaf said in a statement posted on the social media platform X on August 22. But he did not disclose the names of these countries.
According to the Iranian speaker, a security structure is necessary for sustainable peace in the region that is formed by regional countries themselves, rather than by external powers. In his opinion, only an independent system established at the local level can provide security and stability in the long term.
Qalibaf also criticised the US regional policy. He said Washington had neglected the interests of its allies to favour Israel, and this concern was related to the security of these countries.
