The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to start a new phase of its political struggle from August 5, which marks the 3-year anniversary of party founder and former prime minister Imran Khan’s imprisonment. The transfer marks the party’s strategy to regain political momentum as part of a series of activities that will be going on across the country in the next few weeks.

The party’s parliamentary leadership met in the party house in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) House in Islamabad to evaluate the current political scenario and make organisational arrangements for the future. The upcoming campaign will be based on public mobilisation and an appeal to release Imran Khan, party officials said.

The campaign would involve public meetings and demonstrations, as well as a planned long march, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said, adding that consultations with opposition allies, including Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, would be finalised before its final programme was announced.

The party leadership also discussed the health of Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the meeting. The acting chairman, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, stated that the day will be marked with political events throughout the country, saying it is a crucial day for the efforts of party workers and supporters.

The PTI leadership has voiced concern over the legal action against the former prime minister, adding that his political battle will be conducted in a democratic and constitutional way. The leaders of the parties said they hope all the litigations against Imran Khan will be settled based on the law.

The PTI dismissed the reports separately that it has agreed to withdraw its boycott of the standing committees of the National Assembly. Chief Whip Malik Amir Dogar explained that the party’s stance has remained unchanged thus far and assured that the parliamentary committees will be decided after consulting Imran Khan.
