Lahore – Despite the approval of a 3 to 4 percent increase in fares as a result of negotiations between transporters and authorities following the increase in the prices of petroleum products, the Regional Transport Authority has made it clear that any kind of arbitrariness will not be tolerated.
Speaking to the media after a meeting held at the Transport House, Secretary RTA Rana Mohsin said that all transporters will be allowed to charge fares within the prescribed limit. If any institution or driver is found charging fares more than the prescribed 4 per cent, immediate legal action will be taken against them.
He added that it will be mandatory to prominently display the new fare at all bus stands and transport points so that passengers are fully aware.
According to sources, in the recent meeting, the 7.27 percent increase in the prices of petroleum products was cited as the main reason due to which the cost in the transport sector increased.
Officials stressed that the government is trying to minimise the burden of inflation on the public, which is why the fare increase has been limited.
Transport officials have also appealed to citizens to immediately file a complaint in case of any illegal increase so that action can be taken.
According to experts, although the increase in fuel prices affects the transport sector, a balance between the public and business can be maintained through regulatory control.
