ISLAMABAD: The appointment of the Leader of the Opposition after a long political deadlock in the National Assembly has given a new direction to the atmosphere of the House. Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq selected Mahmood Khan Achakzai for this important position after completing consultations with the opposition.
For several months, opposition members had been expressing reservations that the parliamentary role in the House has been limited without the Leader of the Opposition. Due to this, protests and noise were repeatedly seen during the sessions.
Opposition’s Stand
The opposition parties said that in the absence of the Leader of the Opposition, neither the process of parliamentary oversight is effective nor can a balanced response be given to the government.
They demanded that a consensus figure be appointed to the post immediately so that the proceedings of the House can run normally.

After listening to the views of all parties, the Speaker ensured that the appointment was in accordance with constitutional principles. After several days of consultation, a consensus was reached on the name of Mahmood Khan Achakzai.
His appointment was officially announced on January 16, after which opposition members welcomed the decision.
Political significance
According to political experts, Mahmood Khan Achakzai’s leadership will provide the opposition with an organized and dynamic platform. Since he belongs to Balochistan, provincial harmony is also expected to be strengthened.
It is also being said that under his leadership, the opposition will play a more serious and effective role in parliamentary debates.
Government-Opposition Relationship
According to analysts, the new appointment may improve the political dialogue between the government and the opposition. Differences will remain in place, however, the tradition of resolving them in a parliamentary manner will be strengthened.
