Islamabad: Significant progress has been made regarding the privatisation of the national airline. In a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, officials were briefed on the privatization of PIA, operational improvements and future business plan.

Officials told the meeting that the government has decided to hand over 75 percent shares of the national airline to the private sector, while to maintain the identity of the company, a guarantee has been added that the name and theme of the airline will not be changed.

The briefing was informed that according to the new business plan, the number of airworthy aircraft has been planned to be increased from 18 to 38 in the coming four years to modernise the fleet of the national airline. At the same time, the scope of PIA flights will be expanded to more than 40 cities by 2029.

Addressing the meeting, the Prime Minister directed that all privatisation matters should be taken forward in a transparent and speedy process. He also emphasised the punctuality of the national airline’s flights and said that a comprehensive strategy should be prepared to improve the system.
