ISLAMABAD – There has been a positive development on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border issue, as both sides have reportedly agreed in principle to reopen the crossing, which has been closed for over a week. Diplomatic sources believe that the long-awaited reopening could happen in the next two days if no new differences arise.

Encouraging signs have already emerged at the Chaman Spin Boldak crossing, where empty trucks stranded for days have started entering Pakistan. Vehicles carrying Afghan nationals are also returning to Afghanistan, indicating a gradual resumption of normal activities.

Authorities have begun final preparations to reopen the Torkham border under the ceasefire agreement. Customs teams have been directed to return to duty and scanning equipment has been installed to ensure prompt clearance of cargo.

For now, the crossings at Ghulam Khan, Angor Adda, and Chaman remain closed, disrupting trade and daily movement. Hundreds of trucks carrying perishable goods like fruits and vegetables are still stranded on both sides, causing huge financial losses to traders.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said that both Pakistan and Afghanistan are committed to eliminating terrorism. He warned that if we fail to act seriously now, peace in the entire region could be seriously threatened.

Speaking to Arab News, the minister confirmed that the peace agreement was brokered by Qatar and Turkey. He expressed special gratitude to the Emir of Qatar and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for their cooperation in bringing the two sides closer together.

The agreement comes as both China and Saudi Arabia praised the recent ceasefire between Islamabad and Kabul. Riyadh called it a “step towards peace and stability,” while Beijing offered to help strengthen bilateral ties.

Looking ahead, Pakistani and Afghan delegations will meet again in Istanbul on October 25 to continue negotiations aimed at enhancing lasting border peace and cooperation.
