Sugar supply affected, Sugar Mills Association writes second protest letter to government

Islamabad: Sugar Mills Association has written a second letter to the Federal Minister for Finance and Minister for Food Security, warning that the closure of FBR’s S-Track portals is severely affecting the supply of sugar across the country.

According to the association, the portals have been closed so that imported sugar can be brought into the market with tax exemptions, but despite this, sugar prices have not stabilized. The market is becoming unstable due to stopping the lifting of local sugar and giving priority to imported sugar.

The letter states that sugar mills have ample sugar stocks, but the closure of the S-Track system has affected the transportation of trucks. Due to this situation, timely supply of sugar is not possible and the mills are unable to empty their stocks.

The Sugar Mills Association has said that if the current restrictions continue, sugar shortage and further increase in prices will become inevitable. The association warned that the government would be responsible for this situation, as these policies could lead to a financial crisis for the industry.

The government has been urged to immediately restore the S-Track portals so that the crushing season can start on time and unnecessary fluctuations in sugar prices can be eliminated.
